A Piece of Work / Nezgodna is a performance based on the artist’s ten years of welding and fabrication work in the Netherlands, England and Wales.
Drawing from her own experience of entering a heavily gendered working environment, the performance moves between personal history, physical labour and the body shaped by it. The artist recalls and performs movements retained from years of workshop work – tightening, drilling, grinding, cleaning, welding – not as demonstrations of technique, but as traces of a body trained to work.
At the centre of the performance are images and video of bronze casts of the artist’s personal protective equipment, used throughout her decade of welding. The PPE becomes a monument to workers and to the promise of protection, while also pointing to what it cannot protect the body from: the long-term injuries and physical consequences of labour.
Towards the end, the artist speaks about her own injuries and introduces a small shadow box containing a urine-treated steel plate. The intimate materiality of the work brings the audience close to the private experience of a body that works, ages and is injured – a part of working life that remains largely invisible.
The performance brings together the working body, personal history and material traces of labour, asking what remains in the body when the work itself is left behind.
