“Conversation with My Son” is a series of performances initiated in 2023 by Dariusz Fodczuk and his mother, Albina Fodczuk. It emerged after the death of the artist’s father, as a consequence of changes in the dynamics of family relationships. Over the course of three years of collaboration, their joint actions became a space for observing and reshaping the bond between a mother and her now ageing son.
Following the death of Albina Fodczuk, the artist continues the series, attempting to sustain a conversation in a situation where the other voice can no longer be heard. Through performative actions, he seeks a new form for a relationship that, with death, undergoes yet another transformation.
The series remains in dialogue with Zbigniew Warpechowski’s performance Conversation with My Son. In this historic work from 1976, the artist, not yet forty, spoke with his ten-year-old son. In Fodczuk’s performances, the conversation between a mother and her son, who is nearly sixty, reverses the dynamic proposed by Warpechowski. However, following Albina Fodczuk’s death, the series must undergo yet another transformation.
