Veda Popovici is an organiser, theorist and artist based in Bucharest. Committed to anti-capitalist, anarchist and communitarian values, their work has developed alongside anti-authoritarian initiatives such as the Macaz cooperative, Claca social centre and Pink Block network. Also dedicated to radical housing justice organising, Veda co-founded the Common Front for Housing Rights in Bucharest and has been a core organiser for the federation The Block for Housing as well as for the European Action Coalition for the Right to Housing and the City. Veda has paired this activism with engaged research on evictions, restitution and gentrification.
Currently, they work with the activist-led participatory grantmaking fund FundAction. Their art practice is political and based on situational, performative and collective productions, while exploring the possibilities of political imagination. One of their projects, co-created with Mircea Nicolae, History Does (Not) Repeat Itself, is a speculative history of 1990s emancipatory people’s struggles in Romania.
Recently, Veda has been writing about decolonial practices in organising, transformative justice and recovery from activist burnout. A newer project, Bound, explores through drawing and poetry the dilemma of legitimate violence in revolutionary scenarios.
